So Jim has given us Domesticate Animals as the theme for #SLS this week and I couldn’t resist this song. Billy Currington’s “I Want You To Love Me Like My Dog”. This isn’t the best video, but it is live and I hope you enjoy it!
Like My Dog
He never tells me that he’s sick of this house He never says why don’t you get off that couch? He don’t cost me nothin’ when he wants to go out I want you to love me like my dog
He never says I need a new attitude Him and my sister ain’t always in a feud When I leave the seat up he don’t think that it’s rude I want you to love me like my dog does, baby!
When I come home, I want you to just go crazy He never looks at me like he might hate me I want you to love me like my dog
He never acts like he don’t care for my friends He never asks me where in the hell have you been? He don’t play dead when I wanna pet him I want you to love me like my dog does, honey!
He never says ‘I wish you made more money’ He always thinks that pullin’ my finger’s funny I want you to love me like my dog
He don’t get mad at me and throw a major fit When I say his sister is a bitch
I want you to love me like my dog does baby When I come home, I want you to just go crazy He never looks at me like he might hate me I want you to love me like my dog!
This summer and fall has passed me by and I have been crazy busy with a whole lot of life and I have missed participating in #SLS. Today will more than likely be a double dip.
I listen to a whol lot of different music from jazz, pop, contemporary Christian to country. I am a huge fam of Blake Shelton and one of my favorites of his “Ol Red” about a prisoner who becomes the trainer of the prison’s tracking dog and then is able to hatch his escape because of that dog. I hope get as much of a laugh as I do when I listen to the song. Enjoy the video, it is from when Blake was just beginning in the business.
Ol’ Red
Well, I caught my wife with another man And it cost me ninety-nine On a prison farm in Georgia Close to the Florida line Well, I’d been here for two long years I finally made the warden my friend And so he sentenced me to a life of ease Takin’ care of Ol’ RedNow,
Ol’ Red, he’s the damnedest dog That I’ve ever seen Got a nose that can smell a two-day trail He’s a four legged tracking’ machine You can consider yourself mighty lucky To get past the gators and the quicksand beds But all these years that I’ve been here Ain’t nobody got past Red
And the warden sang Come on somebody, why don’t you run? Ol’ Red’s itchin’ to have a little fun Get my lantern, get my gun Red’ll have you treed ‘fore the mornin’ comes
Well, I paid off the guard and I slipped out a letter To my cousin up in Tennessee Oh and he brought down a blue tick hound She was pretty as she could be Well they penned her up in the swampland ‘Bout a mile just south of the gate And I’d take Ol’ Red for his evening run I’d just drop him off and wait
And the warden sang Come on somebody, why don’t you run? Ol’ Red’s itchin’ to have a little fun Get my lantern, get my gun Red’ll have you treed ‘fore the mornin’ comes
Now Ol’ Red got real used to seein’ His lady every night And so I kept him away for three or four days And waited ’til the time got right Well, I made my run with the evening sun And I smiled when I heard ’em turn Red out ‘Cause I was headed north to Tennessee And Ol’ Red was headed south
And the warden sang Come on somebody, why don’t you run? Ol’ Red’s itchin’ to have a little fun Get my lantern, get my gun Red’ll have you treed ‘fore the mornin’ comes
Now there’s red-haired blue ticks all in the South Love got me in here and love got me out
Today Jim has given us the prompts of Baking/Bread/Cake/Pie/Picnic for #SLS. I kid you not, I have over 3,000 songs in my Apple Music library and I could not find any songs that met the criteria. So I did what all writers do when they are looking for their topic – I did some research and I found three oldies but goodies. So yes, you are getting a three-fer!!
That’s what’s in My Rattled Cage, thanks for stopping by!!
The first is from Bing Crosby called Sunshine Cake which he sung in the movie Riding High in 1950.
Lyrics
We ought to bake a sunshine cake It does more good than a big thick steak
Start with a tablespoon of trouble Then add a smile and let it bubble up We ought to bake a sunshine cake It isn’t really so hard to make Fresh tears, a pound or two of pleasure Kind words you needn’t use a measure cup
It’s not from a recipe book You don’t have to be a good cook Or run to the oven and look
With such a simple dish, all you do is wish So why not bake a sunshine cake Of course it may keep your dreams awake
Friends say there’s nothing like the flavor Don’t wait to do your friends a favor And for goodness sake, let’s bake a sunshine cake
It’s got vitamins A, vitamins B Vitamins L-O-V-E If you’re fat, it’s for that If you’re thin, stuff it in
What’s wrong if you get a double grin We ought to bake a sunshine cake
It’s not from a recipe book You don’t have to be a good cook
Or run to the oven and look With such a simple dish, all you do is wish So why not bake a sunshine cake Of course it may keep your dreams awake Friends say there ain’t nothing like the flavor Don’t wait to do your friends a favor And for goodness sake, let’s bake a sunshine cake
The second one is from 1955 and the Mc Guire Sisters called “Theme from Picnic” is a popular song, originated in the 1955 movie Picnic, starring Kim Novak and William Holden, which was based on the play of the same name. The song is often referred to simply as “Picnic.” The music was written by George Duning
Lyrics
On a picnic morning without a warning I looked at you and somehow I knew
On a day for singing My heart went winging A picnic grove was our rendezvous
You and I in the sunshine We strolled the fields and farms At the last light of evening I held you in my arms
Now when days grow stormy And lonely for me I just recall picnic time and you
Now when days grow stormy And lonely for me I just recall picnic time and you
Songwriters: George W Duning
The third song is from The Four Tops, I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch from .
Can’t Help My Self
Ooh Sugar pie, honey bunch You know that I love you I can’t help myself I love you and nobody else In and out my life (in and out my life) You come and you go (you come and you go) Leaving just your picture behind And I kissed it a thousand times
When you snap your finger or wink your eye I come a-running to you I’m tied to your apron strings And there’s nothing that I can do (ooh)
Can’t help myself (no) No, I can’t help myself (ooh)
‘Cause sugar pie, honey bunch (sugar pie, honey bunch) I’m weaker than a man should be I can’t help myself I’m a fool in love, you see
Wanna tell you I don’t love you Tell you that we’re through and I try But every time I see your face (can’t help myself) I get all choked up inside
When I call your name Girl, it starts to flame (burning in my heart, tearing it all apart) No matter how I try My love I cannot hide
‘Cause sugar pie, honey bunch (sugar pie, honey bunch) You know that I’m waiting for you (waiting for you) I can’t help myself I love you and nobody else, ooh
Sugar pie, honey bunch (sugar pie, honey bunch) I’d do anything you ask me to (ask me to) I can’t help myself I want you and nobody else, ooh
Sugar pie, honey bunch (sugar pie, honey bunch) You know that I love you (love you) I can’t help myself No, I can’t help myself, ooh
Sugar pie, honey bunch (sugar pie, honey bunch) You know that I love you
Songwriters: Edward Jr. Holland / Lamont Dozier / Brian Holland
This week Jim has given us the four elements of Air/Earth/Fire/Water as our prompts for #SLS. I have chosen to share Matt Maher’s Firelight and on a different chord Brad Paisley’s Water. I love both of these songs for different reasons. Firelight is a reminder that I do need God and Jesus to be my FIRELIGHT in my life. Brad Paisley’s love affair with water is every child and adult’s story if you think about it, the video for this song is pretty cool also!!
Firelight Lyrics
Dear Jesus where are you tonight I bear a sadness deep inside I’m aching for a faith in things I strain to feel I need to know that you are real
Oh Savior open up my eyes I wanna see You like a child There is a haze on the horizons of my heart Dear Jesus show me where you are
Be my firelight, be my firelight Burning fierce and bright, be my firelight
How do I move on and be free From all these things that I have seen All of my memories are turning into scars Oh my God put back what’s been torn apart
Be my firelight, be my firelight Burning fierce and bright, be my firelight
If anyone remembers my name If I’m ever known for anything Let it be I ran into the night Running with a firelight, firelight
Cause I don’t wanna stroll the streets of gold While there’s still a soul to love Let me run into the night Running with a firelight, firelight Burning with a firelight, firelight
Inflatable pool full of dad’s hot air I was three years old Splashin’ everywhere And so began my love affair With water
On a river bank With all my friends A big old rope tied to a limb And your a big old wuss If you don’t jump in The water
Yeah when that summer sun starts to beatin’ down And you don’t know what to do Grab your swimming trunks Ice up that old Igloo Drive until the map turns blue
Daytona Beach on spring break Eighteen girls up on stage White t-shirts about to be sprayed With water
Oh let’er go boys
Yeah when that summer sun starts to beatin’ down And you don’t know what to do Just go and grab someone you wanna see in a bathing suit And drive until the map turns blue
You can stay right there When the daylight’s gone Play truth or dare And it won’t take long ‘Fore you and her got nothin’ on But water
All you really need this time of year Is a pair of shades And ice cold beer And a place to sit somewhere near Water

This week Jim has given us the prompts of Best/Better/Good/Great for #SLS. So, I have chosen Steven Curtis Chapman’s The Great Adventure. This song is just a constant reminder that if you have faith in a Higher Power, I just happen to call mine God, then you really are on a great adventure.
My great adventure has just surpassed the 6 month mark of SOBRIETY and I am loving this adventure as it is so much more this time. I am seeing things come true that weren’t even close to coming true when I had the previous 2 1/2 years of sobriety before I turned 50 in September of 2016. At that time I had quit doing service work in both my online meetings with Global Steps AA and my face to face meetings with my home group The Goliad Group. I have realized that that was the primary cause of my major relapse and then my continued roller coaster ride over the last 3 1/2 years. I am very proud and blessed to be on this GREAT ADVENTURE of RCOVERY!!

Lyrics
Saddle up your horses Oh oh oh Oh oh oh
Started out this morning in the usual way Chasing thoughts inside my head I thought I had to do today Another time around the circle Try to make it better than the last I opened up the Bible And I read about me Said I’d been a prisoner And God’s Grace had set me free And somewhere between the pages It hit me like a lightning bolt I saw a big frontier in front of me And I heard somebody say let’s go
Saddle up your horses We’ve got a trail to blaze Oh oh oh Through the wild blue yonder of God’s Amazing grace Let’s follow our leader into the Glorious unknown This is the life like no other whoa whoa This is the great adventure
Oh oh oh Oh oh oh yeah, yeah
So come on, get ready for the ride of your life Gonna leave long faced religion In a cloud of dust behind And discover all the new horizons Just waiting to be explored This is what we were created for, yeah
Saddle up your horses We’ve got a trail to blaze Oh oh oh Through the wild blue yonder of God’s Amazing grace Let’s follow our leader into the Glorious unknown This is the life like no other whoa whoa This is the great adventure
We’ll travel on, over mountains so high We’ll go through valleys below Still through it all we’ll find that This is the greatest journey That the human heart will ever see The love of God will take us far Beyond our wildest dreams
Saddle up your horses We’ve got a trail to blaze Oh oh oh Through the wild blue yonder of God’s Amazing grace Saddle up your horses We’ve got a trail to blaze (we’ve got a trail we’ve got a trail to blaze) Through the wild blue yonder of God’s Amazing grace Let’s follow our leader into the Glorious unknown This is the life like no other whoa whoa This is the great adventure
Oh oh oh oh (this is the great adventure) Oh oh oh oh (this is the great adventure) Oh oh oh oh (this is the great adventure)
This week Jim has given us the prompts of Cool/Freeze/Heat/Melt for #SLS. When I was 17 in 1983 a little movie came out starring Nicholas Cage and Deborah Foreman. I loved the movie but there was a particular song that even when I hear it now all these years later makes me tingle because it is a quintessential love song. Below I have included a trailer clip with the song from the movie Valley Girl along with the official music video from Modern English and a remake by Jason Mraz.
Below the videos are the lyrics. That’s what’s in My Rattled Cage, thanks for stopping by!!
Lyrics
Moving forward using all my breath Making love to you was never second best I saw the world crashing all around your face Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace
I’ll stop the world and melt with you You’ve seen the difference And it’s getting better all the time There’s nothing you and I won’t do I’ll stop the world and melt with you
Trapped in the state of imaginary grace I made a pilgrimage to save this human race Never comprehending the race has long gone by
I’ll stop the world and melt with you You’ve seen the difference And it’s getting better all the time There’s nothing you and I won’t do I’ll stop the world and melt with you
The future’s open wide
I’ll stop the world and melt with you I’ve seen some changes But it’s getting better all the time There’s nothing you and I won’t do I’ll stop the world and melt with you, yeah
I’ll stop the world and melt with you You’ve seen the difference And it’s getting better all the time There’s nothing you and I won’t do I’ll stop the world and melt with you
I’ll stop the world and melt with you I’ll stop the world and melt with you
This week Jim gave us the prompts of Maria/Marie/Mary for our #SLS. I love this prompt because I have been planning this post since a few weeks ago when I saw it was coming up.
German priest Johann Georg Seidenbusch published a hymn entitled “Gegrüßet seist du, Königin” in his 1687 devotional book Marianischer Schnee-Berg. This hymn was inspired by the pilgrimage devotions at Aufhausen Priory, and contains various salutations taken predominantly from the Salve Regina.
This hymn was soon to be found in various forms in many Catholic devotional books, and a Latin translation, “Salve Regina coelitum“, was soon created. The modern melody first appeared in the 1736 hymnal Geistliche Spiel- und Weckuhr, and Melchior Ludwig Herold’s 1808 hymnal Choralmelodien zum Heiligen Gesänge contained the version that is standard today.
The English translation “Hail, Holy Queen enthroned above” first appeared in The Roman Missal in 1884. This translation gained worldwide popularity after being featured in the 1992 film Sister Act.
I am a very proud God loving God fearing Catholic and I was a singer in the 8 AM Choir when we were still having choir. Every time we sing “Hail, Holy Queen” or “Oh Maria”, I have to be careful because I always want to break into the version from Sister Act because they truly did that song in an uplifting appropriate manner.
I am going to include two versions of the song. The first version is performed by a Catholic Priest acapella l and the other will be of course from Sister Act.
That’s what’s in My Rattled Cage, thanks for stopping by!!
Lyrics
Hail, Holy Queen enthroned above, O Maria! Hail, Mother of mercy and of love, O Maria! Triumph all ye cherubim! Sing with us ye seraphim! Heaven and earth resound the hymn! Salve, salve, salve, Regina!
Our life, our sweetness here below, O Maria! Our hope in sorrow and in woe, O Maria! Triumph all ye cherubim! Sing with us ye seraphim! Heaven and earth resound the hymn! Salve, salve, salve, Regina!
To thee do we cry, poor sons of Eve, O Maria! To thee we sigh, we mourn, we grieve, O Maria! Triumph all ye cherubim! Sing with us ye seraphim! Heaven and earth resound the hymn! Salve, salve, salve, Regina!
Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, O Maria! Towards us thine eyes compassionate, O Maria! Triumph all ye cherubim! Sing with us ye seraphim! Heaven and earth resound the hymn! Salve, salve, salve, Regina! O Maria!
When this our exile is complete, O Maria! Show us thy Son, our Jesus sweet, O Maria! Triumph all ye cherubim! Sing with us ye seraphim! Heaven and earth resound the hymn! Salve, salve, salve, Regina!
O clement, gracious Mother sweet, O Maria! O virgin Mary we entreat, O Maria! Triumph all ye cherubim! Sing with us ye seraphim! Heaven and earth resound the hymn! Salve, salve, salve, Regina!
I apologize for posting this entry for #SLSfor 6/14/20, for which Jim provided the prompts of JACK/JOHN on Wednesday 6/17/20, however I have been wanting to write this post but I just did not have a chance to do so until now, for the reason why you can visit my post Very Late #SoCS 6/13/20.
So for this week’s post I have chosen a song that reflects the notion that everyone begging for change in downtown San Antonio or downtown anywhere USA or the world are simply bums or low lifes that refuse to get a job and are simply looking for a hand out. You and I do not know the situation that put that person where they are at. I know at one point my mother was living in her car and not because of any particular thing, it was a whole lot of things that put her in that situation.
I am extremely blessed that I have not ever hit such a horrible rock bottom abd lost my home, my family, – I have lost jobs – that I have been on that end of having to beg for money on the street. “THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD GO I“.
This proverb is an expression of humility; in using it, a speaker acknowledges that outside factors (such as God’s grace, or one’s upbringing) have played a role in one’s success in life. The adverbial phrase is often set off with commas: “There, but for the grace of God, go I.”
So, for this weeks selection I give you one of my favorite Luke BRyan songs, You Don’t Know Jack”.
Lyrics
He asked me for a dollar, I said “Go get a job” I turned up my collar and started walkin’ off He said “I don’t blame you, I know what you think I’d just spend your money, to buy another drink”
But you don’t know Jack Double shot, eighty proof, on the rocks Until you’ve lost it all And you can’t go back To your life, and your kids, and your ex-wife With just a telephone call If you think it’s just a bottle In an old brown paper sack You don’t know Jack
He showed me a picture, of two little girls Wearin’ Easter dresses, hair done up in curls He said “God bless their mamma She said I couldn’t stay And buddy if you’re wonderin’ How could I throw it all away
“You don’t know Jack Double shot, eighty proof, on the rocks Until you’ve lost it all And you can’t go back To your life, and your kids, and your ex-wife With just a telephone call If you think it’s just a bottle In an old brown paper sack You don’t know Jack
If you never felt the fire Running through your veins If you’ve never seen the devil Face to face
You don’t know Jack Double shot, eighty proof, on the rocks Until you’ve lost it all So brother just be glad, and tonight Hold your kids, kiss your wife And when you talk to God Count up all your blessings And thank the good Lord that You don’t know Jack
This week Jim gave us the prompts of Big/Large/Little/Small/Tall/Tiny for #SLS. I have chosen one of the most beautiful songs that I ever heard in the show Touched By An Angel, one of my favorite shows of all time. Martina McBride’s Little Bits of Lightening from 1998.
I was unable to find an official video for the song but I did find a beautiful lyric video that I wanted to share. I hope you enjoy the song. That’s what’s in My Rattled Cage, thanks for stopping by!!!
Lyrics
I have listen to the sound Of a lonely night Gone a thousand miles Through a storm-filled sky Looking for some light
Never dreamed of turning back But faced the wind instead ‘Cause I knew somewhere You’d be waiting there Down the road ahead
All through the longest night Your burning light did shine Like little bits of lightning Lighting up the whole world with your flame Every day to make it better Strong enough to carry the weight Your love became my saving grace Like little bits of lightning Shining through the rain
If I should ever lose my way Find the strength in me is gone I won’t worry what to do ‘Cause Darlin’ I know you Will come and take me home
All through the longest night Your burning light did shine Like little bits of lightning Lighting up the whole world with your flame Every day to make it better Strong enough to carry the weight Your love became my saving grace Like little bits of lightning Shining through the rain
Strong enough to carry the weight Your love became my saving grace The kind of feelin’ words can’t explain Like little bits of lightning Shining through the rain Like little bits of lightning Shining through the rain
This week Jim gave us the prompts of seasoning prompts Cinnamon/Mint/Parsley/Pepper/Rosemary/Sage/Salt/Thyme for #SLS. Prior to writing my post I wanted to see if anyone else had posted a song called Cinnamon Girl, I did notice that the only deadhead in the hameau and Fandango over at This, That, and the Other posted the song by Neil Young.
I have chose a different route with Prince’s song that I feel is very apropos for all the racial unrest going on in the United States due to the death of Houston Native, George Floyd by excessive force of the Minneapolis Police Officer and his colleagues that stood by and allowed it to continue.
While this song is about a Holy War, it is still relevant to our current situation of racially charged violence that our current president seems to enjoy stoking.
Please enjoy Cinnamon Girl by Prince from his Musicality album. That’s what’s in My Rattled Cage, thanks for stopping by!!
Lyrics
As war drums beat in Babylon Cinnamon girl starts to pray I’ve never heard a prayer like this 1 Never before that day
Tearful words of love for people she had never met before Asking God to grant them mercy in this face of a holy war
Cinnamon Girl
Cinnamon Girl of mixed heritage Never knew the meaning of color lines Nine one one turned that all around When she got accused of this crime
So began the mass illusion, war on terror alibi What’s the use when the god of confusion keeps on telling the same lie?
Cinnamon GirlDon’t cry,
Don’t shed no tears 1 night won’t make us feel Cause we know how this movie’s ending
Cinnamon Gir
lAs war drums beat in Babylon And scorch the blood red sky Militants bomb the foreign gun Both sides truly die
Cinnamon girl opens the book she knows will settle all the scoresThen she prays after the war that there will not be anymore
